Air India, owned by the Tata Group, has acquired its first narrow-body aircraft with a new livery. The Airbus A320 Neo, registered as VT-RTN, arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport on July 7 from Toulouse, France. This marks a significant milestone in Air India’s ongoing transformation.
Upgrading Air India’s Fleet
The newly arrived Airbus A320 Neo features a three-class configuration. It offers 132 comfortable economy class seats, 24 premium economy seats with extra legroom, and luxurious business class seats. Notably, this is the first time Air India is offering premium economy class on a narrow-body aircraft. The plane is expected to commence short-haul domestic flights in August 2024.
Current and Future Plans
Air India currently operates three A320 Neo aircraft in its domestic network, all with similar three-class layouts but in older liveries. Starting in early 2024, the airline plans to add new, upgraded, and refurbished narrow-body and wide-body aircraft to enhance the customer experience.
Historical Overview of Air India
Founded by J.R.D. Tata, Air India took its first flight on October 15, 1932. Over the decades, it has established a vast network of domestic and international flights. After 69 years of government ownership, the airline was reacquired by the Tata Group in January 2022.
Transformation Journey
Through its Vihaan.AI initiative, Air India aims to become a world-class airline while maintaining its Indian heritage. In the initial “Taxi” phase, the airline focused on reviving long-idled aircraft, increasing staff, upgrading technology, and improving customer service.
Global Partnerships
As a member of the Star Alliance, Air India benefits from a global network that enhances connectivity and travel options for passengers. Tata’s strategic vision facilitated the addition of this new aircraft, underscoring Air India’s commitment to excellence in service and operations.
