India has launched the “Fauna of India Checklist Portal,” a landmark initiative aimed at wildlife protection. This comprehensive collection lists 1,04,561 species, making India the first country to document all its wildlife. The launch coincided with the 109th Foundation Day of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Kolkata, led by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.

Importance of the Fauna Checklist

India

Conservation and Protection:

  • Establishes a baseline for monitoring biodiversity changes and identifying species needing urgent conservation action.

Scientific Research:

  • Provides a detailed inventory of regional wildlife, aiding scientists in understanding biodiversity and sustainable resource management.

Policy and Planning:

  • Offers crucial data for formulating informed policies and programs to protect wildlife, preserve habitats, and manage the environment.

Global Leadership and Conservation Efforts

India’s achievement in creating this checklist underscores its leadership in biodiversity documentation and sets a benchmark for other nations. The Minister highlighted initiatives such as the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” project and the International Big Cat Alliance, alongside the successful cheetah relocations, as examples of India’s commitment to wildlife conservation.

Impact and Future Directions

The checklist will be invaluable for taxonomists, researchers, academics, policymakers, and conservationists. It demonstrates India’s dedication to biodiversity conservation, reinforcing its position as a global environmental steward and laying the groundwork for continued leadership in global environmental protection.
