Transforming Connectivity: Major Infrastructure Projects in J&K

Must read

In a significant development, the Government of India has sanctioned 19 major infrastructure projects in J&K, marking a substantial step toward enhancing both connectivity and security in the region. With an estimated total investment of ₹10,637 crore, these projects reflect a strategic push to modernize transportation and bolster defense preparedness in sensitive areas.

Spotlight on 4 Strategically Vital Projects

Among the approved initiatives, four standout projects have been identified for their critical importance in linking remote and border regions:

  • Pir Ki Gali Tunnel
  • Sadhna Tunnel
  • Zaznar–Shopian Road
  • Trehgam–Chamkote Road

These projects are central to improving year-round accessibility in high-altitude and strategically sensitive zones.

Pir Ki Gali Tunnel: Gateway to All-Weather Connectivity

Planned at a cost of ₹3,830 crore, the Pir Ki Gali Tunnel will stretch 9 km across the Pir Panjal range. It will provide all-weather access through the historic Mughal Road, which links Kashmir with Jammu’s Pir Panjal region. Once completed, it will ensure uninterrupted movement, particularly vital during the snow-bound winter months.

Sadhna Tunnel: Lifeline to Karnah

The 7-km Sadhna Tunnel, estimated at ₹3,330 crore, is designed to connect Kupwara with the remote region of Karnah. The existing route frequently suffers from snow blockages and avalanche risks. This tunnel will guarantee year-round accessibility and bolster connectivity in a critical border zone.

Zaznar–Shopian Road: Enhancing Regional Trade Routes

With a budget of ₹836 crore, this 28-km road project will link Zaznar to Shopian, improving transport corridors between the Mughal Road and Baramulla. The improved infrastructure is expected to stimulate regional trade and ease the movement of goods and people.

Trehgam–Chamkote Road: Strategic Border Route Upgrade

The Trehgam–Chamkote Road, a 68-km stretch, will be upgraded at an estimated cost of ₹966 crore. This road serves as a critical link between Kupwara and Teetwal, close to the Line of Control (LoC). Enhancements to this route will strengthen military logistics and civilian access in border areas.

Strategic Importance of Infrastructure Projects in J&K

These infrastructure ventures are more than just transport upgrades—they are strategic assets. By diversifying critical routes away from the vulnerable NH44, especially during crises, the government aims to fortify alternative corridors like the Mughal Road.

The improved infrastructure will accelerate troop mobility, ensure faster supply chains, and provide reliable civilian access in times of conflict or natural disasters. Notably, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been entrusted with executing the Pir Ki Gali and Sadhna tunnels, aiming for swift and efficient completion.
