On January 14, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mission Mausam, an ambitious program commemorating the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), established in 1875. This initiative aims to revolutionize India’s weather forecasting and bolster climate resilience.

Objectives of Mission Mausam

The mission is designed to elevate IMD’s capabilities in:

  • Forecasting accuracy
  • Advanced weather modeling
  • Efficient information dissemination

With an initial budget of ₹2,000 crore for its first two years, the program aims to benefit critical sectors such as:

  • Agriculture
  • Aviation
  • Defence
  • Disaster Management
  • Tourism
  • Healthcare

Focus on Weather Event Management

A key component of Mission Mausam is its focus on managing specific weather phenomena. This includes:

  • Enhancing or suppressing rainfall
  • Mitigating hailstorms
  • Reducing fog and lightning strikes

Such advancements rely on cutting-edge research in cloud physics to achieve effective weather modification.

Cloud Chamber Innovation

A groundbreaking feature of the mission is the development of a cloud chamber at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune. This state-of-the-art facility will enable scientists to study:

  • Cloud formation in controlled environments
  • The role of seed particles in forming cloud droplets and ice crystals

Institutional Oversight

Mission Mausam will be steered by three premier institutions:

  1. India Meteorological Department (IMD)
  2. Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM)
  3. National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF)

All these bodies operate under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, ensuring coordinated efforts and efficient use of resources.

Quick Facts about the IMD

  • The IMD serves as India’s National Meteorological Service.
  • It provides crucial weather data for agriculture, aviation, and other sectors.
  • The department issues severe weather warnings and conducts advanced meteorological research.

Mission Mausam is set to transform India’s approach to weather forecasting and climate management, marking a new era of technological and scientific excellence.
