India has taken a significant step forward in secure data transmission with a successful test of quantum secure communication technology. Spearheaded by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with IIT Delhi, the breakthrough was achieved using a free-space optical link, paving the way for highly secure communication channels—particularly vital for defence and national security.

About Quantum Secure Communication

Quantum secure communication uses the principles of quantum mechanics to create data links that are virtually impossible to intercept or hack. At its core is quantum entanglement, a phenomenon where two particles remain connected across any distance. If a third party tries to eavesdrop, the system detects the intrusion instantly by noticing changes in the quantum state.

How the Technology Functions

This system relies on two key elements: quantum entanglement and quantum key distribution (QKD). Through entangled photons, a secret key is shared between sender and receiver. The moment any interference occurs, it disrupts the entanglement and signals an alert. The IIT Delhi test demonstrated a secure key rate of around 240 bits per second with a quantum bit error rate (QBER) under 7%, highlighting its reliability.

The Successful Demonstration

The recent demonstration, funded by DRDO and carried out at IIT Delhi, transmitted encrypted data over more than one kilometre through the air without cables. This test forms part of a broader initiative to develop photonic-based technologies for free-space QKD, offering an infrastructure-light alternative to traditional fibre optics. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called this a “game changer” for future military communications.

This emerging technology holds promise across various domains:
